Horror is personal for us. We collect it ourselves, and over the years Misfit Toys has carried nearly every horror line there is, from rare vintage monster toys to today’s collector figures. Our selection changes as pieces come in, so call or stop by to see what’s in the store. We buy and sell horror toys, figures, and memorabilia at 3511 Houston Avenue in the Houston Heights, along with prototypes, and screen-used props through our sister store, Lost and Found Media.
A short history of horror toys
- 1931: Universal releases Dracula and Frankenstein. With The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), The Wolf Man (1941), and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), these films create the monsters that would fill toy shelves for decades.
- Late 1950s: Universal’s classic films come to television through the Shock Theater package in 1957, and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine launches in 1958. Together they create a generation of “Monster Kids.”
- 1961: Aurora releases its Frankenstein model kit, followed by the Wolf Man in 1962 and the Mummy in 1963. Aurora’s monster kits are now among the most sought-after vintage horror collectibles.
- 1963: Louis Marx & Co. produces figures of the Universal monsters.
- Mid-1970s: Mego’s Mad Monsters bring Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy to its 8-inch, cloth-costumed format.
- 1980: Remco releases Universal Monsters figures, including its Mini-Monsters line.
- 1989: At the height of Freddy-mania, Matchbox releases an 18-inch talking Freddy Krueger.
- 1998: McFarlane Toys launches Movie Maniacs with Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, and Freddy Krueger, opening the door to modern horror figure collecting.
- Early 2000s: Sideshow’s 12-inch Universal Monsters set a new standard for premium horror figures.
- 2005: NECA launches Cult Classics, beginning a horror catalog that continues today.
- Today: NECA, Mezco, Super7, and independent sofubi artists keep both classic monsters and modern slashers on collectors’ shelves. See our Godzilla, Kaiju & Sofubi page for more on sofubi.

How we value horror
Two pieces that look alike can be worth very different amounts. When we make an offer, we look at:
- Demand: how quickly the piece sells in our store
- Current stock: whether we already have it in inventory
- Model kits: sealed or unbuilt, original box, complete parts, and instructions
- Packaging: card or box condition, and whether it has been opened
- Completeness: original accessories, weapons, and costumes
- Smoke and sun: smoke odor or staining, and faded boxes, cards, or figures
- Prototypes: stage of development and where the piece came from
